How independent hotels win back direct bookings

Booking platforms are good at one thing: being found. The price is a commission on every stay. The goal for an independent hotel is not to leave them, which would be unrealistic, but to make sure that the guests who already know your name, or who look you up before they book, end up booking with you.
Guests check you out before they book
A lot of guests find a hotel on a platform, then open a new tab and search for the hotel itself. That is your chance. If your own site looks tired, is slow on a phone or hides the booking button, they go back to the platform and the commission is gone.
So the question is simple: when someone arrives from a search for your hotel name, what do they see in the first five seconds?
Put booking on the first screen
On the Hotel Hašťal site, the redesign centres on a calm lobby photograph and a booking bar visible straight away. Dates, guests, one button. No scrolling to find out how to book.
If your booking engine lives on another domain, that is fine, but the handoff should feel seamless. Pre-fill the dates the guest already picked, keep the same colours and make sure it works on a phone.
Give a reason to book direct
People will not switch just because you ask. Offer something real and say it clearly near the button: a better rate, a late checkout, a welcome drink, free cancellation for longer. Only promise what you will really deliver.
Keep it short and put it where the decision is made, not in a banner nobody reads.
Show the hotel as it really is
Photos decide more than text. Invest in a day with a good photographer: rooms in good light, the breakfast, the street outside, the staff. Guests have seen too many identical hotel pictures to be moved by them.
Write like a person. A paragraph about who runs the hotel and why they love the building is more memorable than a list of amenities.
Make it work in more than one language
If a large share of your guests come from abroad, a proper English version is not optional, and a German or Spanish one may well be worth it. Machine translation of the whole site looks careless; translate the pages that matter and have a native speaker read them.
Do the basics well and the site will be doing quiet work for you every day: answering questions, building trust and sending a share of guests straight to your own booking page.
