WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or custom code: how to choose
- Web
- Platforms
The right platform is the one that fits what you need in the next three years, not the one that is fashionable. Here is how we think about the choice.
WordPress
Easy to edit yourself, with a huge library of plugins. A good fit for content-heavy sites and teams who want to publish often. It needs regular updates and some care with security and speed.
Shopify
A ready-made online shop with payments, tax and shipping built in. The quickest route to selling online. Customising beyond the platform's limits takes work, and apps add monthly costs.
Webflow
Designer-grade visuals that you edit without code. A good fit for marketing sites where look and feel matter and the team wants to change content themselves.
Custom code
Hand-built, fast and fully yours, with no platform limits. The right choice for ambitious motion and 3D, for unusual features and for products that will grow. It costs more to start, and you depend on a developer for changes unless a content management system is added.
Questions that decide it
- Who will edit the site, and how often?
- Do you sell online, and how many products?
- How important are speed, motion and a one-of-a-kind look?
- How will the site need to grow in two or three years?
- What is the budget, for the build and for the years after?
